The Resume Boys

If you’re in high school, and especially if you’re a senior applying to colleges, I’m sure you’ve heard of the College Essay Guy. He’s a guy (obviously), that assists students around the country for their personal statements and supplemental statements for college essays -- and he’s amazing at it too. He hosts free workshops around the US and even released several free podcasts for students that can’t reach him in person. In fact, he conducts most of his services through the internet: through videos. And his concept of reaching out to people on a deeper level really inspired me. His workshops proved to be the most effective when he was able to have one on one or group workshops with students, mentoring them and walking them through the college application process. These are the services that we want to provide for the community. It’s something that Robert, Alex, and I are totally capable of doing. Not college essay per se, because we need help from the College Essay Guy ourselves, but services for a topic that we, as a high school students, are more proficient in: building resumes. Whether it be for applying for a leadership position for a local student government, applying for an entry level job, or becoming a representative for a community, a resume is always needed to advance ourselves in this competitive world. It’s no longer, “Hey, I’m a nice guy and I work hard.” We have to show it on paper nowadays. So how does this have to do with the social issues that we have had prior research on?

For Alex and I, the social issue that matters the most to us is poverty. For Robert, it’s immigration, specifically targeted for the Mexican American population. We feel that these social issues are bonded together by something we are all a part of: education. This is how we want to assist the social issues that we care about; by educating the student population, especially those who are low income, first generation immigrants, live in single parent households, live on welfare, or any combination of these circumstances. A resume, if built properly and constructively, can lead to countless opportunities.

These are our services: tutoring, resumes, scholarship connections. We are first and foremost tutors, because most of the nonprofits that we are partnered with are educational institutions. Let’s see how this goes. Welcome us, the ResumeBoys.
